Brief Overview of the Disaster 
An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale devastated northwestern Turkey at 3:02 a.m on August 17, 1999. Over 17,000 people were killed and about 32,000 were injured in and around Izmit in the Marmara region (as of November 1999; figures issued by the Government of Turkey). The epicenter of the quake was near Izmit city, 65 miles (104 kilometers) east of Istanbul.
