Workshop on Disaster Recovery Planning

In response to a demand driven request from Government Officials of Qatar, the International Recovery Platform (IRP) organized a three-day capacity-building workshop, which briefed senior professionals from Doha on lessons learned from the Recovery and Reconstruction that followed the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the Great East Earthquake and Tsunami, and the Post-Wenchuan Earthquake. "An effective recovery process is contingent on governments giving special attention to the inter-sectoral approach and the inclusion of disaster risk reduction," said Mr. Kouchi Shingo, Senior Recovery Expert. Using examples of the Pheonix Recovery Plan and China's Recovery Plan, as well as IRP Guidance notes, participants were able to improve their understanding of the important of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into recovery in the context of Sustainable Development and consequently put into practice by developing their own preparedness plans. "We need to scale up local learning and international best practice sharing in order to strengthen our future DRR strategies and recovery efforts," said Mr. Brigadier Hamad Othman N. Al-Dehaimi, Secretary General, Permanent Emergency Committee, Ministry of Interior, State of Qatar.
