Supporting communities to rebuild in Sri Lanka


When the Indian Ocean tsunami struck on 26 December 2004, large areas of the coast of Sri Lanka were devastated, with massive loss of life and damage to property. The survivors were faced with the trauma of losing their homes, livelihoods and, in some cases, their loved ones. In addition to the largescale relief operation launched in the immediate aftermath of the tsunami, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement has made a significant contribution to the recovery effort through the construction of new housing for tsunami survivors.
